Alex Devereux, GAZeL Chair
Alex Devereux’s remarkable 25-year career of providing strong direction, expert advice, and training within engineering, business and academic environments, is only highlighted by his continuing quest to find the keys to success for his students. Persistence is his motto. Alex is a multi-talented and diverse, high-energy individual who is a highly respected leader with a clear, focused direction.
This focus has allowed Alex to achieve notable results throughout his career, starting with working in the area of commercial architecture and engineering, the F-16 program for General Dynamics, developing high temperature ceramic fiber design systems for British Petroleum worldwide, facilitating executive and personal development training sessions, as well as entrepreneurial business consulting, and education.
Alex is an effective mentor and Knowledge Manager who advocates collaboration and getting the “right information to the right people at the right time”.
Alex also believes that “it does not matter who you are or your station in life, high achievement always takes place in the framework of high expectations and persistence. Therefore, anything is possible if you see it, expect it and persist”.
Alex currently holds the position of Chair of the School of Drafting and Design at ITT Technical Institute in Tempe, Arizona, where he has received high praise for his achievements as an instructor and his programs in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, Construction Management, Digital Entertainment and Game Design, and most recently, Visual Communications. His natural problem solving abilities and process has proven invaluable as he expertly managed and nurtured the growth and transformation of his programs from an occupational focused agenda to a balanced career and academic emphasis with a focus on continuous education through lean and thriving times.
Leading with conviction, Alex truly exemplifies the “big picture” thinker, always having the foresight to see the long-term implications of a plan and achieves it.
In his 10 years at ITT Technical Institute, Alex has seen first hand the issues that are starving bright minds from getting the education they want and need in order to stay afoot with society. He believes “we must change the way we teach to our children rather than change our children to conform to the way we have always taught. Our children know more about current technology than we do and we must be willing to act as facilitators, while learning from them, to guide them while helping them move us forward in the 21st Century”. There exists a large technological gap that is increasing as we speak. “Our children are more capable of filling that void a lot faster than we adults are. Therefore, our challenge is determining how to keep a young workforce inspired to achieve greater heights and be creative - if we adults are conditioned to fight innovation and inhibit growth”.
Displaying a wide range of interests, Alex is deeply involved in public service, as well as community organizations, where he serves in a variety of leadership roles. As an educator and advocate, Alex’s important contributions as President of both The Global Literacy Foundation and GAZeL (The Greater Arizona eLearning Association), as well as Vice Chair of the Peoria Unified School District’s Commission, Southwest District Representative for ITT Tech’s National CDD Curriculum Committee, National Vice President of Curriculum and Accreditation for ADDA (American Design Drafting Association), Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and Chair of Publications Committee for CSI (Construction Specification Institute) are testament to his drive and passion for effecting positive change. The vast influential relationships he has built over the years continues to strengthen his solid reputation amongst his colleagues and in the community.
An alumnus of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Alex holds a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis (BSCE), has completed his Masters of Education (MEd) at Jones International University with an emphasis in eLearning, Corporate Training, and Knowledge Management. He is certified as a Knowledge Manager and Knowledge Environmental Engineer. Alex is a lifelong learner who continues to stay abreast of industry and 21st century academic trends.
