GAZeL Ideation
Colleagues;
Developing strategic content re: e-learning resources begins with you!
Please add a few bullets to any questions where you can add value.
Use italics to show your additions or use the track changes under tools in Word.
Also, identify thought leaders who should receive an invite to a GAZEL event.
Please email your additions to Mark Edwards at drmetrics@cox.net.
1. What advances and research are most needed in e-learning?
• Create links to e-learning sources, especially descriptions and reviews
• Illuminate, Moodle, etc. on-line training
• Create learning repositories – Richard will provide links to UK and other sources
• Conduct ongoing internal and external environmental scanning to identifypersonal, scientific, technical, economic, social, and political trends as they apply to e-learning, nationally and globally
• Build a taxonomy of e-learning methods
• Set out the differences in e-learning between adults and the various ages of children
• How are secondary students different from college or adult learners?
• How should e-learning be implemented for elementary and middle-schools?
2. What technology, software, and staffing will support research efforts?
• Establish an "ideal" for e-learning and/or WBT software. If we could have whatever we wanted, what would it be?
3. How can we engage corporate and private parties to engage in GAZEL and e-learning actions and R&D?
• Present them with a vision of what we industry and other organizations see as the future of e-learning, ask for their opinions and contributions.
• Those who see the value now will jump on now. Those who do not may do so later.
• If someone doesn't see the value of e-learning and WBT, telling them about it will not inspire or engage them..
4. What new capabilities do advanced computing and communications provide that may drive e-learning developments?
• Look at education on Blackberries and other portable or mobile learning devices and if and how they can be effectively used for training
5. How can the most promising research issues be best addressed?
• Create a CoP, Group or Wiki to which anyone interested can post
• Create recognition and awards for promising research
6. What are the complementary roles of industry, government and universities in meeting future challenges?
• Universities and industry need to create wish lists and see how and where they overlap.
• I do not believe government has an appropriate role in this unless universities and industry want to lose control of it.
• Government may provide funding for research or tests.
7. What are the criteria that are useful in gathering and dissemination (e.g., scientific merit, impact)?
• If we use Moddle, we can sort by subject and possibly have sub-sorts by key words.
• These will be established by the players themselves. We cannot begin to answer that question alone.
• It will also be an ever-changing target. As new ideas are presented, the criteria will change.
• My personal bias is "what works."
8. What are the benefits of supporting communications and dissemination between statewide entities and resources?
• Create an energy that becomes self-sustaining and takes on a life of its own.
9. What unsolved problems remain and are they being adequately addressed?
• Create a metric for what is learned in the human brain
o Build learning outcome metrics
o Build learning process metrics
o Test e-learning tools and methods on process and outcome metrics
10. What other states are similarly gather and dissemination of R&D efforts?
• MA, NY, CA, GA, TX, WA
• I’ll guide a student researcher on this to assemble relevant info (Mark Edwards – Jim Austin, do you have someone who could work on this?)
11. What funding resources are available to sustain these efforts
• NSF Science of Learning Centers (SLC) at: http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5567?
12. Who should receive an invitation to GAZEL?
• The State Board of Education
• TABHI participants definitely should also be included.
