Description
On Wednesday, December 10, 2008 the next GAZeL networking event will take place. It will be at the Air Force Research Laboratory. This research laboratory provides simulation training and other technical training for the United States Air Force. The lab is located in Mesa on the Arizona State University Polytec Campus. We will have lunch at noon, which will cost you $15. Dee Andrews will give an overview of the laboratory. We will then tour the facility. This is an event that not everyone gets to see. We are limiting this event to 30 people so decide early if this is something you want to do.

SUMMARY REPORT for this report, click here!
For those of us who had never been to this training laboratory, the experience was fascinating. For those who had been there before, it was still very interesting. The only difficult part was finding the training lab.
We must thank Dee Andrews, PhD, who planned this event for GAZeL. Also thanks to Penny Bullington, Dee Andrews’s assistant for setting up the details and providing the Chinese lunch. The meeting opened with Alex Devereux, President of GAZeL, making announcements and welcoming everyone. While we were eating, Col. Dan Walker gave us an overview of the facility and the simulation training that takes place there for the Air Force pilots. We saw a video about the facility, the training and the Air Force in general. Then we were given a tour. I do not have pictures to go with this brief summary because we were not allowed cameras, cell phones or even purses on the tour.
We were introduced to a simulator. The staff explained how the various software works to change the environment and present events that the students may encounter. We had a young man with us who is entering the Air Force on Dec.16th and he had never been in a simulator. Of course he was the one who got this experience while the rest of us looked on. Nobody became woozy. We also saw how a room full of computers guides the simulators and measures the activities.
This was a great chance to see education/training at the highest level of efficiency. On behalf of GAZeL, we repeat our thanks to Dr. Andrews and his staff.
January 14, 2010 SUMMARY OF GAZeL’S 5TH ANNUAL CEO BREAKFAST. On the morning of Tuesday, January 12, 2010 the 5th annual CEO breakfast was held at the University Club in Phoenix, AZ. About 7:15-7:40 AM the invitees networked and exchanged greetings and business cards. Breakfast was served at 7:45. Alex Devereux, GAZEL’s President made announcements of future events and presented certificates of appreciation to several members of the board and technology community for outstanding assistance they have given to GAZeL. Alex then introduced State Senator John Huppenthal, Chairman of the Senate Education Committee. Senator Huppenthal gave a very enlightening talk concerning digital curriculum and hybrid learning that is happening and should be happening. He gave examples where this is already taking place in Arizona. The talk was very interesting and gave us all a better understanding of his knowledge of education in general and eLearning in particular. Much to our delight Senator Huppenthal took this opportunity to announce his candidacy for Superintendent of public instruction. Many people stayed to discuss education and enjoy the morning. Breakfast was delicious, the speech was interesting and we will look forward to future networking meetings.

FRED DUVAL PRESENTS
ARIZONA BOARD OF REGENTS
3-16-10
On March 16th, 2010 GAZeL associates were treated to a presentation by Fred DuVal, Vice President of the Arizona Board of Regents. Mr. DuVal spoke about the problems of the Universities and Community Colleges in Arizona. One of the biggest is that about 38% of the incoming students must take remedial courses because they did not achieve acceptable levels in the K-12 system. Also the various institutions do not communicate with each other. This must improve.
There is some digital curriculum being used in some K-12 schools, but sometimes the students must help the teachers understand the importance of the technology that is being used in business and in the general population. Professional training is insufficient to help teachers use a hybrid system effectively. Of course there is very little funding to provide computers, teacher training and other essential technology. Many questions were asked and suggestions given by the audience. Some decisions must be made about the length of the school year, the individual needs of each student and the ability to learn outside of normal school hours.
The matter of the cost of higher education was brought up. The Arizona Universities are raising tuition, but tuition is still much lower than other State Universities. The Board of Regents is working with on line universities as well as state universities and colleges to provide answers to the questions of providing differing levels of diplomas in order to make college degrees more affordable.
This was an interesting networking event and participation by all attendees was high.
The meeting began a little after noon in the third floor conference room of SkySong. Alex Devereux, GAZeL president, welcomed the people in attendance both at SkySong and on-line. He thanked Cox for the use of the audio line, iLinc for the video hosting, SkySong for the use of the facilities and Flypaper for giving the presentation. He also read a brief statement from Duke Merhavy of ABLE, the company that sponsored the lunch.
Pat Stoner, Georgianna Marie were introduced as well as Don Pearson who gave most of the presentation. Don presented ways in which the Flypaper software saved money and time for the user. Pat compared Flypaper and Power point and Don showed the rich interactive content that Flypaper affords the user. He also showed how all people can deliver content using this system because it is simple and fast.
There was a short break so attendees could get lunch from the buffet supplied from the Wildflower Bread Co. and then the presentation continued.
There was a demonstration of the many choices available in the software from pictures to language and Don pointed out that this could be used in many languages.
After the official presentation there was a time for Q&A and then the meeting was officially closed and the attendees could and did network.
This was an interesting meeting and GAZeL thanks all attendees for coming. The next scheduled meeting is on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at SkySong in the 2nd floor conference room. The title is “THE CLASSROOM OF THE FUTURE” and will be presented by ABLE.

The last networking event of the 2009 year took place in Surprise, Arizona. The Director of Communiversity, Todd Aakhus, Ph.D spoke about the concept of joining with the community and other Community Colleges, Universities and even local high schools to bring coursework to the local community. This concept has been done in a few other cities, but the difference in Surprise is that the technology is advanced. Classes can be taken on line, with a live teacher at the school, or in a hybrid situation. The building is new and computers, classrooms, open areas are inviting to all age groups. Degrees can be granted at the AA and BA, BS area and soon there will be advanced degrees available. Students can work at their own speed and records can be transferred to other schools over the internet.

This was a very interesting meeting. A tour of Communiversity after the presentation was taken and the other attendees felt as I did. This school shows the speed at which technology in education has reached a high. It made me feel that GAZeL has played a part in creating the reality of eLearning.

The February 18th, 2010 meeting of GAZeL took place at SkySong. Announcements were made by Bobbie Kraver in the absence of the President. This was followed by a short presentation by Ted Kraver concerning the striker being proposed to create a Digital Curriculum Institute in conjunction with Arizona State University.
Amy Weibel Ph.D gave a presentation on assessments that match the curriculum being taught in K-12. The information was well researched and developed a sequence that should be followed when assessments and curriculum are being written.
This was a very interesting presentation. Dr. Weibel has had experience in this field at Grand Canyon University, University of Phoenix, Pearson, and many other companies and educational institutions. At this time she is a consultant.
Reports for GAZeL Events
This is the final draft of the Final Report of the February 20, 2008
eLearning Summit. The report summarizes the event and the issues and
recommendations developed during the breakout sessions.
.Strategy and Policy Summit 2008
Issues and Recommendations
.eLearning, conferencing, collaboration and social networking technologies are enabling new global relationships and new models for learning that are dramatically changing the way we educate, communicate and conduct business in the Global Economy. On February 20, 2008 over 170 people attend the eLearning and Collaboration in the Global Economy Summit at the Mesa Convention Center. Participants engaged in developing policies and strategies to position Arizona as a leader in creating, delivering and adopting these technologies and services. They participated in Policy and Strategy Workshops to define opportunities to create 21st Century education, support economic development, train a 21st century workforce, and enable Arizona businesses to be internationally competitive with new tools for global business development, customer relations, collaboration and communication.
.With Learning contributing over $3 billion annually to the state's economy the Summit also addressed strategies to support Arizona eLearning enterprises in creating and delivering advanced technologies and services.
The Summit produced policy and strategy recommendations addressing the following:
• eLearning in Arizona K-12 Schools, Community Colleges and Universities
• eLearning Enterprise Business Development
• eLearning Research in Arizona
• eLearning and Collaboration Technologies in the Workplace
• eLearning in Arizona Workforce Development
.Fom the feedback we have received we presented a great event that GAZEL can
be proud of. We also made about $8000 - $9000 on the event,. Bobbie will
prepare a financial report for the Board.
Thanks again for your help with the Summit. From the feedback we have
received we presented a great event that GAZEL can be proud of. As Ted
Kraver has pointed out, we now need to decide how we will follow-up with
these recommendations. Perhaps a joint effort with GAZEL, ATIC, the Tech
Council, the eLearning Task Force, can take these recommendations to the
next level. This needs to be a topic for discussion at the Board meeting.
